I am so looking forward to starting work on Dinkypu, a collaboration with Easterine, a client and friend in Norway. She is such a wonderful writer with some abstract ideas. Dinkypu is a ragdoll type animal, made up of parts of lots of different animals and is quite a strange but endearing little character. It’s been 3 months since I relocated back to the UK and I’ve been so busy looking for work and trying to settle back in that my writing has taken a back seat. However I feel re-focussed again, the children are settled in nursery and school and I feel raring to go again!

I’ve just been taken on by a literary reviewer as a freelance manuscript consultant which is lovely. I’ve been busy this week setting up a new website, it’s early days yet – www.scriptandedit.com so that I can continue working as a freelance script and book editor and building websites for authors and artists. It runs nicely alongside www.thinkbank.me which I am looking into getting some funding for to be able to feature a lot more on there. It’s always hard moving countries but it seems there are a lot of things for me to get stuck into here – I’m even considering some work at the BBC which may be great but I also want to be able to see my little ones now and again so depends on what else happens in the next month. Well, I am here if anyone needs some work doing and have a few spaces for some new clients so just drop me a line!

This is a new novel I am beginning to write, the first draft of the first page, I wonder how many things I can find to distract myself from writing the second!

HE

J Forrest

Chapter One: 4 weeks ago.

“Where is she!”
The wind was muffling every sound. They heard a window break.
“She’ll be fine. Joya”, reassured Rick.
Something large hit the side of the house.
“Move!” yelled Rick, shoving Joya down the steps.
“Come on Mother” urged Ellis as he clambered up the cellar steps and took Joya’s hand. Sounds like the roofs about to go!”
The three of them battened down the hatch and crouched low.
“Someone will help her”, said Rick.
“She’s a Second” said Ellis matter of factly. “No-one will help her. She’ll die”.
They all sat there as the hurricane devastated their home. They heard the roof rip, the girders fall. The whole town would have to be re-built. Sara was on her way home after the warning. Something had delayed her. She’d had Ellis’ mobile but there was no answer to Joya repeated calls and messages. Now Joya wished she had an auto unit but that was their choice. Ellis was right. Sara was going to die out there if she hadn’t already. If she was a First, everyone would rush to help, provide a shelter for their only girl but she was a wasn’t a First. She was a Second.

Beg had finished loading the cargo onto the vessel. Why they had to use this outdated transport system baffled him. Move with the times. Why they had to pander to these ridiculous people was beyond him. When something was available to you, you took it, that was the obvious choice. They didn’t want help, not even when they were dying. They would actually rather die.
Beg was a HE.

George’s eyes sprang open. The light was fading. She must have dozed off again. She had no idea what time it was, or what day, for that matter. She was lying, sprawled out, on the grass. She yawned loudly and looked around. The Wood was completely bare. She began to panic. She nervously searched for the tree stump which she had remembered leaning against before sleep had overcome her. It was getting darker and she did not want to be alone here at night. It no longer felt so safe. What if the Mumtwips found her?
She willed the light to remain, if only for a short while longer, whilst she found her bearings. She stood up, her joints were stiff. She tried walking to loosen them out. She had only gone a few steps when she felt a queer sensation in her right big toe. This painful sensation rapidly traveled through her right foot and up her right leg, causing her to hop around on her one remaining good leg, clutching her foot with her hand. She cursed under her breath. She looked to see what she had banged into but there was nothing to be seen. Whilst hopping around in a dither, with a very sore foot, she hopped into something else, which also wasn’t there, causing her left toes to swell and then, to top it all off, she fell head first into an invisible bush.
Things weren’t going too well.

Red was getting tired of Mockingbird. She never seemed to get tired of teasing him.
‘It’s a drey, not a nest. They’re different things. And for your information some squirrels can fly. Are all Mockingbirds stupid or is it just you?’

Well the visa applications have gone so we are now at the beginning of our wait. Our house is on the market here in Norway and who knows how long that will take. We’re happy here for a while though, I am progressing well with writing and media projects and the yoga studio is busy as always. It will be sad to leave but we know its the best thing to do for us and the family. Vancouver is looking favourable right now so we are researching a lot when we get the time. I think we will spend some time in the UK before going over to Canada, catching up with friends and family. It’s just yet another adventure!

Mighty Eric is a character I came up with when looking at developing an idea for a troll story, set on the isle of Senja in Northern Norway. There is a fable on Senja about Senjatroll, the biggest troll in the world. I though it would be fun to make his brother the driving force of the story. His brother, the Mighty Eric is from the city and is so small that no-one actually believes he is a troll. He is also a pain in the ass. He sets off on his journey to visit Senjatroll after receiving a mysterious letter and the only person he can find to help him avoid death at the claws of seagulls, rampaging mice and a stupid old witch which all such islands seem intent on having, is a hopeless man who smells of fish.

I wrote 6 episodes for Mighty Eric and there has been a rough teaser made. Originally the idea was to develop the idea for Norwegian television but the idea has been developed further as a concept for web tv. The project is looking for co-producers and I can put anyone interested in touch with the production company involved.

Here is a sample of the pilot episode which I wrote last year.

EPISODE 1 – The Letter

SCENE 1. NARRATORS OFFICE TO EXT. SENJA.

Shots of narrators office, as he begins the speech again, we cut to
landscape shots and the music comes in.

VOICEOVER (Dramatic):
Every journey begins with one small step. Every adventure has its hero, ready to sacrifice himself for the needs of all. Every great myth is carved into the (rustle of paper) erm.. the erm… the stone of ..er…history….Hm, sorry about that…Have you ever been on a journey? Have you ever found yourself feeling so small in comparison to the World?

ERIC:
Welcome to my life.

TITLE SEQUENCE

Epic shots of island, landscapes, scenery eg dramatic skies, crashing waves, local animals etc…

ERIC:
(Mumbling as Eagle circle above) Really! …Asking me to come all this way, nothing could be so important…I had to empty the fridge, it took me hours to pack, then nextdoors cat tried to steal my suitcase…(possible thought images of the battle with the cat)

Eric thoughts are distracted by a bird sound. He yelps as an Eagle lurches towards him. He picks up a stick and thrashes at the air above him. The Eagle picks him up. Lots of shouting….

SCENE 2. EXT SENJA
The Eagle loses its grip and drops Eric. He lands on some grass/moss or other. He shouts up at the Eagle.

ERIC:
Ha! Call yourself an Eagle? Whoever heard of an Eagle fighting a troll. Bird brain. Victory jig time!

He starts to dance.

	ERIC:
An Eagle is no match for me! The Mighty Eric, strong, brave and wearing the best suit these parts have ever seen.

There is a noise above. Eric looks up and sees a huge tree falling towards him. He YELLS. A piece of woods falls to the ground next to Eric, who leaps to the side, terrified. A man, carrying wood, puts down the pile and looks curiously at Eric.

ERIC:
You blind old fool.
